DGJG's gold coin promotion draws deferred

January 28, 2006

. "City of Gold" Coin campaign to continue through DSS 2006 and DSF 2006-07

. Two draws for twenty kilos of gold will be held during DSS 2006

. Remaining seventy-five kilos of gold during DSF 2006-2007

Dubai, January 28, 2006: The Dubai Gold and Jewellery Group has announced that the draws for the 'City of Gold' coin promotion have been deferred and now will continue through Dubai Summer Surprises 2006 and into Dubai Shopping Festival 2006-07, giving buyers a chance to win several kilos of gold and other spectacular prizes.

As part of the revised schedule, the draws for the gold coin promotion will now be held on the first day of DSS, the last day of DSS and the remaining raffles will be held during DSF 2006-07.

The Group, which has been instrumental in promoting and improving the gold and jewellery trade in Dubai, meanwhile announced that its jewellery promotion will continue unabated until March 3, 2006, further emphasizing the association's efforts to reinforce Dubai's reputation as the Jewellery Destination of the World.

Talking about the postponement of the draws, Mr. K.P Baiju, General Manager Dubai Gold and Jewellery Group, said: "The Dubai Gold and Jewellery Group has always initiated its efforts keeping the best interest of our loyal customers and the trade. We have decided to continue the Gold Coin campaign through DSS 2006 and into the next DSF to offer people in Dubai more chances to win gold and spectacular prizes, therefore the coins will still be available for purchase at the same price at the jewellery outlets. If there are any changes made to this promotion, the customers will be notified immediately."

He added: "As an industry body, we are also keeping the interest of the gold and jewellery trade as our priority and we can assure that this move will not adversely affect anyone. There has a lot of hard work and dedication in putting together the campaign and we are extremely thankful to the government for their consistent support. The jewellery promotion will continue as scheduled."

Striking a more upbeat note, Mr. K.P. Baiju said: "I would say that the buyers of the gold coin have already reaped some benefits, considering the appreciation in the gold prices worldwide."

All customers will be called personally by the DGJG staff to update them on the status of the promotion, based on the information available on the coupon.

More information about the promotions and its revised schedule can be obtained on www.dubaicityofgold.com.

Dubai Gold and Jewellery Group offers 143 kilos of GOLD for DSF 2006

December 14, 2005:

Coin and Jewellery promotion revealed for month-long festivities - Gold coins sales start today

5% of weekly and mega prizes will be distributed to local charities, 1% of the total proceeds to be shared with DSF authorities for distribution amongst local charities

Dubai, December 14, 2005: The Dubai Gold and Jewellery Group (DGJG) has announced its mega winnings of 143 kilos of gold and 16 carats of diamonds as part of its spectacular promotion for the 11th Dubai Shopping Festival (DSF) early next year. This promotion is a joint effort of DSF and DGJG and is supported by World Gold Council, PAMP and Real Media Network.

At current prices, over Dhs 10 million worth of gold and diamonds will be given away as prizes during the month-long cultural and retail extravaganza, scheduled to be held from January 4 to February 4, 2006. Central to the promotion unraveled by the group is its special commemorative DSF Souvenir, a specially minted gold coin, which will be available from December 15 onwards.

To mark the 11th year partnership with DSF, the Group has announced a twin promotional campaign offering jewellery buyers a chance to win several kilos of gold and spectacular diamond prizes, further reinforcing its positioning as the Jewellery Destination of the World.

While addressing the media conference organized at the Park Hyatt, Dubai, Mr. Tawhid Abdullah, Chairman of Dubai Gold and Jewellery Group, said: "The Dubai Shopping Festival is one of the biggest shopping extravaganzas of the world and the Group has worked closely with the DSF authorities to extend the best promotional campaigns for the benefit of our members as also our patrons - the shoppers at the festival."

Laila Suhail, DSF Chief Marketing and Communication Officer said, "Our association with the Dubai Gold and Jewellery Group is as old as the Festival itself and today this relationship underlines our commitment to promoting Dubai as the City of Gold. Over the years, the Group has helped many realise their dreams by giving away 542 kilos of gold to-date. Now the DG&JG is unveiling another winning promotion for the DSF shopper, which is yet another example of the collaboration between the government and the private sector. The Gold Promotion, not only offers value for money to its customers, it captures memories of DSF and gives several lucky buyers a chance to win kilos of gold."

On purchase of the official DSF coin -- 22-karat gold coin weighing 2.5-gram worth Dhs 270, customers will be entitled to a coupon which offers prizes of 20 kilos of gold weekly for four consecutive weeks and a mega winning of 30 kilos of gold. Apart from this, five kilos will be given away as scratch and win. The coin price will remain the same throughout the promotion. The gold coin can be purchased at all Jewellery outlets and at specially designed kiosks at the Gold Souq, Shopping Malls, Dubai Duty Free and Global Village.

Mr. Abdullah added: "The annual campaign is eagerly anticipated by avid shoppers and discerning buyers, who look forward to benefiting from these raffles, which provide them with numerous chances to win gold. On purchase of Jewellery worth Dhs500, customers are eligible to win one-kilo gold daily, except Fridays, where four lucky shoppers will each win 1-Carat diamond. Considering the overwhelming response to the commemorative gold coin launched last year, it will be made available to buyers from December 15 onwards."

"As compared to the previous years, the Group has planned its strategy in a way that will multiply the winning opportunities. We guarantee that the quality of the gold coin is the highest, since it is minted and certi-packed by PAMP which is known for its gold bars" said Mr. Abdullah.

Moreover, the Group will distribute 5% of weekly and mega prizes to local charities and 1% of the total proceeds will be given to the DSF officials for distribution amongst local charities.

The World Gold Council which continues to play an integral role in maintaining Dubai's image as the City of Gold is partnering with the Group ever since it was conceptualized.

Moaz Barakat, Managing Director, World Gold Council, said, "Since DGJG's creation in 1996, we have been an active and enthusiastic partner for the Government of Dubai's various activities - the most prominent of which is the annual Dubai Shopping Festival. The World Gold Council congratulates the Dubai Gold and Jewellery Group for its tremendous success with the Coin promotion last year. With continued focus on such innovative promotions, we are confident that Dubai's contribution to the overall global sales of gold will be maintained despite the inflationary trends.

Dubai Gold and Jewellery Group looks at closer trade ties with DTC

December 10, 2005:

Sightholders' visit reflects Dubai's growing reputation as a major diamond centre and Jewellery Destination of World

Dubai, December 10, 2005: The reputation of Dubai as the Jewellery Destination of the world is set to get a major fillip with Diamond Trading Centre (DTC) sightholders looking at closer cooperation with Dubai-based diamond traders.

The visiting representatives are expected to identify successful business models with members of the Dubai Gold and Jewellery Group (DGJG) aimed at generating new trade opportunities and successful relationships for future initiatives.

Talking at a gala dinner jointly hosted by DTC and DGJG at Ritz Carlton Hotel in Dubai on Tuesday, Mr. Tawhid Abdullah, Chairman of DGJG, said: "It's my honour to welcome the DTC sightholders to Dubai and I congratulate them for choosing Dubai as the venue for this year's market familiarization trip. I am confident that the DGJG and DTC can play a bigger and better role in further expanding and empowering the market for the betterment of all.

He added: "On this occasion, I can assure the visiting delegation that Dubai shares the DTC commitment of driving demand for diamonds across the globe as also their vision regarding the future of the diamond industry. We look forward to working with the DTC Sightholders in a way that can transform the diamond jewellery market, creating excitement and new customer demand. This visit will go a long way towards boosting the sales of diamond jewellery reflecting the pre-eminence of diamonds."

Within a short span of time, the diamond market in the region has developed phenomenally to touch US$1.87 billion. Catering to over 160 nationalities residing in the city and over 12 million tourists annually, Dubai offers the largest growth market for diamond with its share growing at 17 per cent compared to the last year.

DSF Commemorative Souvenir and Winning opportunities to mark 11th year partnership

November 14, 2005:

Dubai, November 14, 2005: The Dubai Gold and Jewellery Group announced that it will unveil a 'twin' promotional campaign during the forthcoming Dubai Shopping Festival, with the objective of reinforcing its positioning as the "Jewellery Destination of the World". While the popular 'City of Gold' will be launched in a new avatar, jewellery buyers will also get a chance to win several kilos of gold and spectacular diamond prizes; some of the winnings will be linked to the purchase of the DSF Souvenir, a specially minted gold coin. The World Gold Council is also partnering with the Dubai Gold and Jewellery Group in this extravagant gold promotion and will continue to play an integral role in maintaining Dubai's image as the 'City of Gold'.

Announcing the participation, Mr. Tawhid Abdullah, Chairman of the Dubai Gold and Jewellery Group said, "Dubai Shopping Festival and the Group have worked closely in the past years with a single minded objective of elevating the jewellery retail trade in Dubai as a successful example of collaborative partnership between the government and the private sector. This year, we will continue this relationship to offer even more benefits to members and our patrons, the shoppers at Dubai Shopping Festival."

"Importantly, we also see DSF as a huge platform for the industry to showcase new collections. Keeping this in mind, our promotions will offer winning opportunities at starting points as low as AED 250 (USD 68) and AED 500 (USD 136). At this stage, we estimate that at least 100 kilos of gold will be raffled during the Festival."

As compared to the previous years, the Group has planned its strategy in a way that will multiply the number of winning opportunities. The number of outlets that will offer the promotions will also increase manifold; the Gold Souq, shopping malls, special kiosks, Dubai Duty Free and Global Village will offer several access points.

The DSF period has consistently yielded incremental sales of 25% year on year. The Group will start a major part of the promotion in early December to give people an opportunity to participate well in advance.

DGJG to host Gold Souk at maiden UAE pavilion in the Global Village

25th September 2005

26 retailers to showcase array of exquisite jewellery designs

Dubai, September 25, 2005: The Dubai Gold and Jewellery Group (DGJG) has announced that the Global Village 2006 will have a designated Gold Souk, exclusively for DGJG members as part of UAE pavilion, to be introduced for the first time since the Global Village began alongside Dubai Shopping Festival in 1996. This initiative is in line with the Group's overall objectives to be a part of more local events and activities.

A total of 26 booths dedicated to gold and jewellery sale will be allocated at the Global Village 2006, to be set up from October 26, 2005 to March 3, 2006 at Dubai Land, its permanent location. This unique facility will complement the vast array of opportunities offered during DSF 2006 by the Dubai Gold and Jewellery Group, which will also unveil its unique promotion during the month-long shopping and leisure extravaganza.

The Global Village, Dubai's own celebration of the diversity and similarity among peoples of the world, offers something for everyone who comes visiting - whether it is culture, art, shopping, games, entertainment, good food or just the buzz of interacting with different nationalities.

Talking about the new Souk, Mr. Tawhid Abdullah, Chairman, Dubai Gold and Jewellery Group, said: "The Global Village, has become a must-see destination for anybody visiting the city of Dubai. Setting up the Gold Souk at the Global Village 2005 will be an ideal opportunity for us to showcase our exquisite designs to these visitors from all parts of the globe. The popularity of the Village is a testimony in itself -- the Global Village 2005 attracted around five million visitors. To be present in the Gold Souk at the Village definitely gives us a headstart."

With its presence inside the Global Village, the Gold Souk can play a pivotal role in enhancing Dubai's position as a global hub for gold and jewellery business in line with the vision of the Dubai government. "The souk inside the UAE pavilion is a great step forward in presenting Dubai to the visitors. The trade of jewels, pearls and diamonds forms an integral part of the traditions and culture of the Middle-East region and being at the Global Village gives us an opportunity to preserve this culture"; adds Mr. Abdullah.

Retailers at the Gold Souk include House of Alukkas LLC, Shyam Jewellers, Pearl Enterprises, Goldas LLC, Sky Jewellery, Damas Jewellery, Eternity Jewellery, Alukkas Jewellery, Mashoor Jewellery, Siroya Jewellers, Kairali Jewellery and Atlas Jewellers.

Mr. Abdulla Hamdan Bin Dalmook, Senior Manager, Heritage and Diving Village who is in charge of the UAE Pavilion, said: "This initiative is definitely in line with our overall objective for Global Village -- to create the region's best cultural meeting point where nationalities of all countries, whether resident or visiting, can meet and experience various cultures, traditions and social norms. The Dubai Gold and Jewellery Group and all the exhibitors at the UAE Pavilion will tremendously add to the charm and shopping experience of the new Global Village."

Over the years, the Dubai Gold and Jewellery Group has been offering a fantastic promotion year after year during the DSF festivities in which shoppers get a chance to win attractive prizes.

We are very excited and look forward to welcoming all the visitors at Global Village this year" said Mr. Abdullah, expecting high footfalls at the UAE Pavilion.

An association of more than 650 gold and jewellery members in Dubai, the Dubai Gold and Jewellery Group is responsible for promoting and improving the gold and jewellery trade in Dubai. Founded in 1995, the Group has been part of the Dubai Shopping Festival as one of the Key Sponsors since its inception.

The Global Village 2005 housed pavilions from 46 different countries, 54 restaurants and over 75 kiosks for companies from all over the world and provided the perfect answer to an evening of around-the-world shopping. Located at its own custom-built site sprawling 17.2 million square feet at Dubai Land, the Global Village attracted millions of visitors all through the festival not just for the rich variety of products, games, and entertainment programmes but also for the large spread of cuisines and eating out options at hand.

Australian Jewellery Traders and Dubai Gold and Jewellery Group Join Hands to Develop Stronger Business Relations

17th September 2005

Visiting trade delegation to exhibit exquisite designs to jewellers in Dubai

Dubai, September 17, 2005: A delegation of Australian jewellery traders visiting Dubai between September 19 and 21, 2005, aims to enhance business opportunities between the two major jewellery centres. During the visit, the Australian dealers are expected to exhibit their designs to members of the Dubai Gold and Jewellery Group for probable partnerships in future sales initiatives.

The visit, part of a Middle East Roadshow by Australian jewellers, is aimed at boosting the collaboration between Australia and Dubai-based jewellers and reflects the City's enhanced profile as a major trading hub for gems and jewellery and a retail market for designs from Australia. Supported by the Dubai Gold and Jewellery Group and Gulf Air, the first-of-its-kind Australian Middle East Jewellery Roadshow also covers Cairo, Bahrain and Beirut.

The Roadshow, an initiative by the Australian Trade Commission (Austrade) with the objective to raise the profile of the Australian jewellery in the Dubai market, is expected to generate new business opportunities and develop successful relationships. During the visit, the traders will showcase the latest range of Australian gem designs (mainly opals), precious stones, pearls, gold and diamond jewellery, silver and other accessories.

Commenting on the visit of the delegation, Mr. Tawhid Abdullah, Chairman of Dubai Gold and Jewellery Group, said: "This visit by the Australian jewellery traders is expected to provide a major fillip to the business links between the two

jewellery centres and help unravel business opportunities for future. It's imperative to note that 95 per cent of tourists buy jewellery in Dubai and the city boasts of the highest per-capita gold consumption in the world. This visit by the Australian traders has come at a great time, with the opening up successful relationships and boosting mutual cooperation between Australia and Dubai-based jewellers."

He added: "Dubai, which boasts of variety of jewellery catering to tastes and preferences of over 160 nationalities residing in the city and over 12 million tourists annually, deserves its recognition as the Jewellery Destination of the World. I am confident that the Australian jewellery will surely find its demand among the discerning population of Dubai and the region."

Dubai also offers the largest growth market for diamond with its market growing at a substantial rate of 17 per cent compared to the last year. With local retail industry worth US$3 billion, the UAE is second only to Saudi Arabia in diamond sales in the region.

Added Mr. Abdullah: "The visit offers two-way opportunities for our industry here as Dubai jewellers are renowned for being logistics and redistribution experts besides their retail selling abilities. With the added product range from Australia, Dubai will be in a stronger position to showcase its potential as a jewellery hub. Secondly, it also opens up avenues for Dubai-based jewellery organisations to expand retail operations in Australia."

As Australian trade increases in the region, the awareness and presence of Australian jewellery too is being recognised for its quality and innovative design work. Peter Linford, Australia's Senior Trade Commissioner for the Middle East, said: "The two-way growth in positively booming with outlook trends very strong."

In his comments, James Hogan, President and Chief Executive of Gulf Air, said: "International air travel provides a crucial link between the countries of the Middle East and the global community and Gulf Air has a key role to play in supporting economic growth in the Middle East and the Gulf region, not only through the promotion of travel and tourism but also by facilitating trade between members of the international business community. We are very pleased to work with people who share our vision by supporting and working with Austrade in this venture."

The event, held on Thursday last, came alive with Modhesh, creating a sense of thrill and fun as the little ones present at the venue had a perfect day out. Coupled with the excitement of the presence of Modhesh was the fact that a nine-month-old toddler indeed 'walked' away with one kilogram gold at the raffle. British national Kritika Desai took the honours in the diamond category, winning with one Carat Solitaire.

The presence of Modhesh added to the glitter of the raffle as the little ones of different age, nationalities and ethnic backgrounds burst into excitement as they played with the lovable mascot. For his part, Modhesh captured the children's attention with his antics as he greeted the children, making the event truly unforgettable.

Overall, it was a truly memorable day out for children, who cherished their moment of truth with their lovable friend - Modhesh - vividly depicting the variety and excitement of DSS 2005. To cap the event was one kilogram gold win by nine-month-old Pradeep Singh, making it a truly Kids' Day Out. As part of its DSS campaign, the Dubai Gold and Jewellery Group has offered residents and visitors a chance to win 10 kilos of Gold and 10 Carats of Solitaire diamonds, upon jewellery purchased at approximately 350 participating jewellery outlets in Dubai.

Pradeep's father Krishna, who put in his coupon number 480407 in his son's name, was overjoyed to realise that Lady Luck has smiled on his family. Mr. Krishna, who works in the maintenance of elevators at Al Futtaim Carillion, said: "I have lived in Dubai over the last 12 years, working on the elevators, and this is the first time that I have won something in raffles. Honestly, I don't know how to react as it has come as a pleasant surprise."

With the surprise win elevating his life to new heights, an overjoyed Mr. Krishna said: "I am thankful to the Dubai Gold and Jewellery Group as well as the DSS organizing authorities for this promotion, which has changed my life. My only wish now is to somehow get my wife and child to Dubai because all these years my income was a major impediment. I will try and approach the Indian Embassy for the same. But before that. a big thank you to all those who helped me to this day. Modhesh has proved lucky for me and from now on it is my luck mascot."

The one Carat Solitaire Diamond was won by British national Kritika Desai, holder of coupon number 58221.

As part of the promotion, shoppers are entitled to win 1 Kilogram of gold every week through a raffle draw on purchase of gold jewellery worth AED250 at any participating outlets. Lady Luck Smiles As UAE National Wins Diamond in DGJG's Summer Promotion

31st July 2005

Indian wins fifth week's raffle of 1kg gold in DGJG promotion

Gold, diamond jewellery sales witness unprecedented levels

Dubai, July 31, 2005: In a plot taken out of a Bollywood flick, a UAE national buys diamond jewellery, fails to deposit the diamond purchase raffle coupon, takes off for Mumbai, only to find her flight diverted due to the incessant rain. Forced to fly back to Dubai, she deposits her coupon and wins one Carat Solitaire Diamond. That's what you call a glittering success.

Ms. Meera Salaam now opines that her flight diversion was more of Lady Luck which was destined to smile on her. Putting aside the disappointment of a failed trip to Mumbai, she is thrilled to have won one Carat Solitaire Diamond in the fifth raffle of Dubai Gold and Jewellery Group, DSS 2005 promotion.

An Indian national, Mr. Nigel D'Silva, won one kilogram gold raffle, results of which were declared on Thursday. As part of its innovative promotion, the Dubai Gold and Jewellery Group has offered residents and visitors a chance to win 10 kilos of Gold and 10 Carats of Solitaire diamonds, upon jewellery purchased at approximately 300 participating jewellery outlets in Dubai.

Talking about her 'flight of fancy', Ms. Meera, holder of coupon number 133794, could not hide her excitement on becoming the second UAE national to win during this year's DSS. "It has come as a pleasant surprise. I was disappointed that I did not deposit the coupons on the day I bought the jewellery, though I had kept it ready.. Next day, I had to rush to the airport and the disappointment continued with the rain in Mumbai and my unplanned return. Somewhere in my heart, I always had the feeling that I will win the raffle though my mother always felt otherwise."

She added: "On return from Mumbai, I rushed to the Deira City Centre and deposited the coupon. I told my mother that the flight got diverted because we were destined to win. I am planning to mount the diamond on a ring and gift it to my mother," said Ms. Meera.

An excited Ms. Meera also thanked the DGJG and the DSS authorities. "Diamonds are forever, always special and this DSS has made my life special. I want to extend my gratitude to everyone involved, the Dubai Gold and Jewellery Group and the DSS authorities, for giving me this opportunity. And yes, the promotion is fantastic.. truly sparkling. To win the Solitaire is a great feeling and it is yet to sink in," she added.

Similarly, Mr. D'Silva could not hide his excitement on winning one kilogram of gold. Holder of Coupon No. 357988, an ecstatic Mr. D'Silva said: "The credit should go to my wife, Sumita, who put my name on the coupon. We had gone shopping for gold on her birthday recently, so its kind of double excitement. I have been following the list of winners during this promotion, but to be part of the winners' list is a great feeling. To say that I am thrilled would be an understatement."

He added: "I was coming back from lunch, when somebody called to inform me that I have won the gold. And I thought someone was joking, until it came out true. This is the first occasion when I have won something in raffles and I want to thank the Dubai Gold and Jewellery Group authorities, DSS,. the list is endless. Thank You Dubai and such promotions are taking the emirate to the next level. As for the money, I plan to invest it on my three-year-old son's (Keegan's) education."

K P Baiju, General Manager, Dubai Gold and Jewellery Group, said: "The promotion unveiled by the DGJG has generated an unprecedented response. The jewellery outlets have witnessed a sharp upsurge in the sales and footfalls with gold sales touching Dh 180 million, and sales of diamond, jewellery and other precious stones hitting the Dh45 million mark. To see such figures just after five weeks of the promotion is very encouraging and a good sign for the gold and jewellery trade in Dubai. From the customers' perspective, we still have five more eventful weeks in the offing and I welcome them to partake of the promotion and get lucky."

As part of the promotion, shoppers are entitled to win 1 Kilogram of gold every week through a raffle draw on purchase of gold jewellery worth AED250 at any participating outlets. " Nigerian and Tunisian take centre stage in first DSS raffle

" Nine kilos gold, nine carats of diamond still up for grabs

Dubai, July 3, 2005: The winners took it all, back to where it came from. In a rare coincidence of sorts, two winners from the African continent took the honours in the first raffle of the Dubai Gold and Jewellery Group promotion as part of the 10-week Dubai Summer Surprises (DSS) 2005 extravaganza.

Dr Banfa, a Nigerian and holder of coupon number 52810, won one kilogram of gold while Ben Sli Mane, a Tunisian national and holder of coupon number 02870, was the proud winner of one carat Solitaire diamond in the first of the 10 raffles during the shopping and retail promotion.

The promotion, which normally witnesses winners from a wide array of nationalities year after year, saw two African nationals as maiden winners. Dr Banfa, reacting to the win, could not hide her excitement. "This prize has come as a pleasant surprise, and I thank the Dubai Gold and Jewellery Group for this fantastic promotion and offering many a chance to win. To be the first winner is an honour in itself; but to have won one kilogram of gold.. is an absolute delight," said Dr Banfa, who teaches at the Higher Colleges of Technology.

Dr Banfa who has been living in Dubai for five years, added: "I have filled many such raffle coupons in my life, but unfortunately could not win anything till date. I haven't really given a thought on what to do with the prize, it's yet to sink in, and it is indeed a great feeling."

In his reaction, Mr. Ben Sli Mane said: "In fact, the winner is my friend - Ali Bouslama, who is a businessman and globe trots on official visits. This was Ali's first visit to Dubai which proved lucky. Since I am a resident, we put the coupon in my name and it was a great surprise. I have heard that fortunes change overnight in this part of the world, but I never expected this to happen to him."

Mr. Ben Sli Mane and Mr. Bouslama were shopping during the weekend, when the authorities called up to tell them about the windfall. "I know the difference this one carat of Solitaire diamond will make to my friend's life. He is about to get married and the Solitaire will obviously be a gift to his wife. He is so ecstatic that he plans to come back to Dubai and definitely buy more jewellery.. Thank you once again," he added.

9/11 COMMISSION: NO LINK BETWEEN AL QAEDA AND DIAMONDS

July 25, 2004

Dr. Gaetano Cavalieri, President of The World Jewellery Confederation (CIBJO), an international jewelry confederation of national trade organizations whose purpose is to encourage harmonization, promote international cooperation in the jewelry industry and to consider issues which concern the trade worldwide, has welcomed the report of the official commission into the September 11 terrorist attacks in the United States. In the report, it was stated that there is no real evidence to suggest a connection between the trade in conflict diamonds and the al Qaeda terrorist network, which is considered responsible for the attacks.

"Given the fact that there have been number of news reports in the media suggesting that al Qaeda was using conflict diamonds to finance its activities and to launder money, such a declaration by a body that has spent months studying such issues is very welcome indeed. These charges besmirched the reputation of the products we sell. The commission's report has, I believe, vindicated the diamond in this respect," says Cavalieri, who is also a member of the executive board of the World Diamond Council, which is charged with managing the international jewelry and gemstone sector's campaign against conflict diamonds.

"Al Qaeda has been alleged to have used a variety of illegitimate means, particularly drug trafficking and conflict diamonds, to finance itself.. We have seen no persuasive evidence that al Qaeda funded itself by trading in African conflict diamonds," states the 9/11 Commission report, under a discussion on the al Qaeda money trail.

CIBJO says diamond industry 'vindicated' by 9/11 commission report

Dubai, July 23, 2004: JCK-Jewelers Circular Keystone -- 7/23/2004

There is no evidence that the al Qaeda terrorist network used diamonds to fund its activities prior to the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, according to a highly publicized report released Thursday by the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks.

In the document titled , The 9/11 Commission Report , the independent, bipartisan commission assigned by Congress and President Bush to prepare a full and complete account of the circumstances surrounding the terrorist attacks, including preparedness for and the immediate response to the attacks, said that "we have seen no persuasive evidence that al Qaeda funded itself by trading in African conflict diamonds."

These were welcomed words to Gaetano Cavalieri, president of CIBJO, The World Jewellery Confederation.

"Given the fact that there have been number of news reports in the media suggesting that al Qaeda was using conflict diamonds to finance its activities and to launder money, such a declaration by a body that has spent months studying such issues is very welcome indeed," Cavalieri said, who is also a member of the executive board of the World Diamond Council, which is charged with managing the international jewellery and gemstone sector's campaign against conflict diamonds. "These charges besmirched the reputation of the products we sell. The commission's report has, I believe, vindicated the diamond in this respect."

The commission tackled the questions raised about al Qaeda and conflict diamonds on page 188 of its 585-page report. The full text of its report pertaining to the alleged use of diamonds to finance al Qaeda terrorist activities is as follows:

"Al Qaeda has been alleged to have used a variety of illegitimate means, particularly drug trafficking and conflict diamonds, to finance itself," it stated. "While the drug trade was a source of income for the Taliban, it did not serve the same purpose for al Qaeda, and there is no reliable evidence that Bin Ladin was involved in or made his money through drug trafficking. Similarly, we have seen no persuasive evidence that al Qaeda funded itself by trading in African conflict diamonds."

GOLD & JEWELLERY GROUP PARTCIPATED IN BASELWORLD 2004 FOR THE FIRST TIME

Dubai Pavilion shines with its Dubai Based exhibitors in the world's most prestigious international jewellery exhibition

Dubai , May 4, 2004: The 11 members of Dubai Pavilion exhibitors have returned after their maiden participation in the world's most premier international jewellery exhibition, BASELWORLD 2004. This was a debut participation in a global initiative by the Gold and Jewellery Group.

Under the umbrella of the Gold & Jewellery Group (GJG) the Dubai Pavilion was initiated officially to launch the International activities of the Gold & Jewellery Group primarily by promoting Dubai 's brands and locally manufactured fine jewellery.

It was a joint effort of the Gold & Jewellery Group with Dubai Metals and Commodities Centre (DMCC) this year . The Baselworld Exhibition took place from April 15 to 22 and offered an ideal opportunity to enhance Dubai 's position as a global hub for gold and jewellery business in line with the vision of the Dubai government.

Tawhid Abdullah, Chairman, Gold and Jewellery Group said ; "It was a humble beginning for Dubai with the participation of 10 of the leading jewellers and DMCC, however we view this as a great step forward in presenting Dubai in its International arena with its fine jeweller produce. We expect to see a tremendous fillip in the local manufacturing in the years to come. With the advancement of DMCC and the availability of expert craftsmanship, Dubai 's local production can grow from it's current capacity of 50 tonnes of jewellery production. Keeping this in mind we have decided to showcase Dubai 's exquisite production in the world's most premium show."

"The response we have received by participating in a global initiative of such stature, has further encouraged us to incorporate Dubai 's involvement in such events as a strategic initiative for the years to come. We hope to increase our participation in other major jewellery shows like JCK Las Vegas, Vicenza , Hong Kong ."

More than 2,100 exhibitors from the fields of watches, jewellery, precious stones and allied sectors took part in the exhibition, which attracted over 80,000 watch and jewellery manufacturers from all over the globe. Besides the trade bodies, a delegation of 20 Dubai-based jewellery traders were also present at the exhibition with their unique Oriental and Asian-based designs.

"The Gold and Jewellery Group's efforts at the global event focused on promoting Dubai as a manufacturing centre and an international hub for gold, jewellery, gemstones and precious metals. Until now Dubai 's has been known only for its purchase power. The much-awaited task of positioning Dubai as a regional jewellery manufacturing and marketing centre has been just realized with the launch of Dubai Pavilion in Baselworld," said Mr. Chetan Karani, Chairman of the Baselworld Organising Committee at the Gold and Jewellery Group Dubai.

Gold and Jewellery Group and World Jewellery Confederation (CIBJO) to Create Global Marketing Guidelines

Aggressive marketing campaign, which centres around iconic brand ambassadors representing youths, to spearhead the strategies in global markets

Dubai, April 3, 2004: The Gold and Jewellery Group and the World Jewellery Confederation (CIBJO) have taken a step closer towards the formation of the new global jewellery marketing body, under the aegis of the newly-formed CIBJO Marketing Strategy Commission, which is currently being chaired by the CIBJO Marketing Strategy Commission and Gold and Jewellery Group Chairman, Tawhid Abdullah.

The framework for the strategy was formalised at a landmark meeting between the Gold and Jewellery Group, led by Abdullah, and CIBJO President, Gaetano Cavalieri, during which they outlined the new jewellery marketing strategy will encompass the organisations mission statement to raise the product and marketing benchmark of the group which represents its 37 CIBJO member countries.

Speaking after the meeting, Gaetano Cavalieri agreed that market survey reports have demonstrated that the future growth of the jewellery industry is entirely dependant on an effective marketing strategy, particularly in the areas of merchandising to the upcoming generation of jewellery consumers. "The immediate goal of CIBJO is to sustain the existing market share by retaining customers of the jewellery industry, as well as refocusing our attention to recover the lost business/customers. This, coupled with a strategy to win new customers, is the need of the hour," said Cavalieri.

Speaking about the importance of generating new customers from the youth segment, Tawhid Abdullah added that the group's efforts should focus on the generation of $10 million, which will be utilised to aggressively promote jewellery products to the youth segment worldwide in the various geographical markets. "Research is already available from the World Gold Council and De Beers which proves the immediate challenge faced by the jewellery trade. The retail jewellery sector can no longer take on the burden of marketing alone, and the time has come for the industry to send out a strong and coordinated message to the jewellery companies that this is now the case."

"Our idea is to build an aggressive marketing campaign which will centre around iconic brand ambassadors representing the youth market which will spearhead our strategy in each of the respective markets. The CIBJO Marketing Strategy Commission will seek the help of global jewellery organisations to pool resources in launching the aggressive marketing campaign," Abdullah said, adding that in view of that it was not necessary to allocate separate resources for an extensive market survey.

Both Calvalieri and Abdullah have also outlined that they plan to garner support for a coordinated marketing effort worldwide with the help of organisations such as the World Gold Council, De Beers, and world banks. "I will coordinate a meeting with the CEO of the World Gold Council soon to iron out the formalities for the same. Tawhid Abdullah, in his role as Chairman of the CIBJO Marketing Strategy Commission, will accompany me on our global mission," Cavalieri added.

Highlighting the need for an improved strategy, Tawhid Abdullah, said: "A unified structured marketing and partnership is what the industry needs. We plan to unveil a simple, yet effective, marketing plan to target proven growth demographics globally. The strategy will also independently target the various main geographic regions -- Asia, Africa, Middle East, Europe and Far East . The planning will cover the issue at hand, action plan, time frame and desired results. The brand ambassadors will spread the relevant messages communicating the jewellery field such as emotion, well-being, self-satisfaction, innovation, celebrations, good feeling etc to the identified segments. Apart from this, we will organise international exhibitions at the schools and universities worldwide to target the right audience," he added.

CIBJO, which represents four million jewellery companies worldwide, will advise on the opportunities to generate governmental grant for market developmental activities. The CIBJO president also agreed to address the Dubai Initiative to target the young customers in the forthcoming CIBJO meeting in Basel .

Dubai Initiative , aimed at helping the Emirate becoming an international trading and manufacturing hub for the precious metal and gemstone business, was enthusiastically embraced by the key representative bodies of the jewellery trade at the 2 nd Dubai City of Gold Conference in December 2003.

Gold & Jewellery Group promotes Dubai as jewellery hub in Mumbai in Mumbai

2 June 2003, Dubai, UAE

The Gold and Jewellery Group Dubai, together with Emirates Transguard, recently organised an event in Mumbai to promote Dubai as a regional gold and jewellery hub.

Senior Government officials from Dubai Customs and Dubai Airport Free Zone, together with Dubai Metals and Commodities Centre (DMCC) also joined the delegation, which addressed over 200 top Indian jewellery manufacturers and exporters.

There was a great deal of interest as the trade event covered all aspects of jewellery trade with Dubai, from transport and import to security and manufacturing.

Emirates Transguard, the security services provider of Emirates Airline, has perhaps the largest international network for the transport of valuable cargo, ensuring ease of import for Dubai's jewellery traders.

"I am very pleased with the response at this event," said Tawhid Abdullah, Chairman of the Gold and Jewellery Group. "The Indian subcontinent is a major trading partner for us in Dubai, and we wanted to reach out directly. There is no doubt that the Indian community plays a big role in jewellery sales. Over 60% of sales are in the 22 karat market."

"Dubai is the region's major import/re-export/export centre. In addition to retail and wholesale activity, the city is also becoming a growing manufacturing centre, with almost 60% of the high karatage traditional Indian and Arabic jewellery in the market being made here. This trip is to help us foster closer relations with our Indian partners, and also to look for new business avenues both for them and for us in the world of jewellery."

Gold terminal to open in Dubai's Gold Souk

25 May 2003, Dubai, UAE

Facility will increase convenience of jewellery importing

The Gold and Jewellery Group today announced an exciting tie-up with Emirates Transguard to create a Gold Terminal in the Gold Souk. The new terminal will allow jewellery importers to receive their cargo in the Gold Souk, instead of at the airport. The new arrangement will be faster, more convenient and less expensive for traders.

Opening next month, the facility will place Dubai on a par with the world's most modern cities, in terms of infrastructure for gold and jewellery.

Emirates Transguard, the security services provider of Emirates Airline, has perhaps the largest international network for the transport of valuable cargo, ensuring ease of import for Dubai's jewellery traders.

The facility will be available exclusively for the 450 members of the Gold and Jewellery Group, each of whom will have their own account. The single window clearance system will ensure that delivery and customs clearance can take place in one process. Traders will also be able to clear diamonds through the Kimberly Process, which gives a certificate of origin.

Clearing jewellery at the new terminal will be a huge cost benefit for traders, as each transaction will cost only Dhs 100. There will also be a special cost for the import of large quantities.

"This is an innovation that will have a real impact on jewellery traders here," said Tawhid Abdullah, Chairman of the Gold and Jewellery Group. "While preferential rates will make the facility extremely cost-effective, the chief benefits will be the faster turnaround time, increased security and easy access for our members."

Previously, it was quite expensive for small traders to import goods, and they sometimes relied on the assistance of bigger retailers. However this new system will mean that every trader, big or small, will be able to clear goods using their own account with Dubai Customs. This allows for a much more transparent market."

He added that the facility would also be of great benefit to traders around the region, who can clear their jewellery through Dubai. This will be a particular benefit for diamond traders, as Dubai is the only Middle East country to implement the Kimberly Process, which gives an internationally recognised certificate of origin.

"Emirates Transguard is very happy to help improve Dubai's facilities as the City of Gold," said Dr. Abdullah Al Hashimi, Chief of Group Security, Emirates Airline. "We are expecting the terminal to clear a prospective 1,000 transactions each month. Currently, the value of our monthly shipments is in excess of US$100 million, and we expect the new facility to be responsible for a large number of these transactions."

"As a group, Emirates Airline is always looking for opportunities to promote Dubai. This facility is another feather in Dubai's cap, and we are proud to be making it happen."

Gold & Jewellery Group conducts training for Jewellery retailers

7 April 2003, Dubai, UAE

The Gold and Jewellery Group recently organised a three-day customised training workshop for jewellery retailers on retail selling, entrepreneurship and attitudinal orientation. Over 100 retailers attended the training sessions conducted by SMM-ART Consultancy Services, a leading Indian training and consultancy firm.

The training workshops were conducted after an extensive survey among Dubai's jewellery retailers to ascertain the types of training required to maximise customer service orientation and the selling potential of the retailers. The workshops addressed two separate groups, owners and salespeople through 'Leadershift' a leadership training session for owners and 'Unleash your Potential', a session on retail selling for salespeople.

"Our ongoing strategy ensures that our members receive several management development inputs from the Group," said Mr. Tawhid Abdullah, Chairman of the Gold and Jewellery Group. "The tightly tailored training programmes have helped each participant to maximise his selling potential through providing world class service."

"The Group policy of promoting Dubai as the City of Gold has been built meticulously by ensuring that we continue to offer the best products at the best prices. Undoubtedly, best service is also a key element in our success, and this is something we are constantly building on."

Gold and Jewellery Group donates Dhs 100,000 to Humanitarian and Charity Foundation

1 April 2003, Dubai, UAE

The Gold and Jewellery Group Dubai has donated Dhs 100,000 to the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Humanitarian and Charity Foundation for Iraq. The Group, a non-profit trade organisation of more than 475 gold and jewellery outlets, had earlier earmarked this amount from the DSF Millionaire promotion for charity.

The decision was made unanimously by the Gold and Jewellery Group Managing Committee, in light of the current situation.

"As a trade body, we are glad to be able to contribute to this very heartfelt cause," said Tawhid Abdullah, Chairman of the Group. "This amount was designated for charity during the Millionaire promotion, and we had not yet decided to which cause it should go. His Highness Sheikh Mohammed's Charity Foundation is playing a leading role in helping the Iraqi people, and we felt it was a very worthy cause."

Kumar Dhanak, Managing Group Committee member, agreed. "The people of Iraq are in the midst of a humanitarian crisis, and we hope that this donation will go some small way towards helping to distribute aid to them."

Mr. Tawhid Abdullah, Chairman, Gold and Jewellery Group gave a keynote address at the show. We believe that there will be many opportunities for us to seek mutual business opportunities together."

The delegation also invited members of the trade in Hong Kong to the Middle East Watch & Jewellery Show in Dubai this April 2003.

Elaborating on Dubai's reputation as a Gold and Jewellery hub of the Middle East, Mr. Abdullah observed, "The City of Gold, Dubai at the retail level stands for quality, variety and the world's best price."

He also emphasised that the variety of jewellery sold in Dubai was quite astounding due to the fact that there are as many as 133 nationalities and as many jewellery cultures within the city's jewellery designing trade.
